One of the most frustrating and disturbing trends in drug abuse in right now in California is the rise of synthetic, so-called “designer” drugs – Spice, bath salts, mephedrone, etc.
Frustrating, because there is often no easy way to test for the myriad chemical formulations utilized by illicit drug manufacturers. That is done on purpose, to circumvent law enforcement.
Disturbing, because while these drugs are openly sold and marketed on the Internet and in paraphernalia shop as being “legal” or “safe”, they are often neither. Many of the precursor chemicals used in these drugs are Scheduled, and the drugs themselves have been associated with often-horrific side effects, overdose, and death.
25i-NBOMe – The Popular Party Drug You’ve Probably Never Heard of
On October 11, 2015, a 19-year-old University of California Santa Barbara college student died of “acute hallucinogenic polysubstance intoxication”, and among the drugs in his system was 25i-NBOMe, also known as “N-Bomb”.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office released this statement – “Although 25I-NBOMe has been around for more than 12 years, recreational abuse rates for the drug have increased dramatically in the past few years, resulting in a significant number of hospitalizations for overdoses, as well as deaths. Ingestion of 25I-NBOMe can result in seizures, aggression, self-harm and agitation, distortions in space and time, psychosis-like symptoms, an abnormally rapid heart rate, increased body temperature, and rapid breakdown of muscle tissue.”
Synthetic drugs are anything but “safe” – if you or someone you love is abusing designer drugs, you can get the help you need at Lasting Recovery – a nationally-accredited outpatient drug and alcohol rehab program in San Diego.
