“Teaching patients receiving addiction treatment how to use health care may empower them to better engage in their health management. Electronic health record patient portals may be useful in accomplishing this goal.”
~Dr. Constance M Weisner, Doctor of Public Health, et al, “The LINKAGE Clinical Trial”
Recovery from substance abuse is never passive. In recovery support group meetings or alcohol/drug rehab facilities in San Diego, participants are told that a recovery program “works if you work it“. Now, research suggests that recovery of the mind, body and spirit may include learning how to actively engage in their own health management.
In new six-month study published June, 2016, in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers discovered that participants who were also taught how to better communicate with their physicians had increased abstinence from alcohol and drugs. The participants who were taught how to use the online “patient portal” realized better progress in their substance abuse recovery than those who only followed the standard treatment protocol of medical exams, drug/alcohol detox, group therapy, one-on-one counseling, and recovery support and fellowship meetings.
- Frequent health portal use
- Better communication with physicians
- Viewing of test results more often
- Greater likelihood of discussing alcohol/drug use with physicians
- Increased abstinence
- Longer participation in addiction treatment
In other words, being actively involved in your own physical health and your own substance use recovery go hand in hand, and each benefits the other.
Lasting Recovery, an outpatient drug rehab in San Diego, also believes that true recovery from a substance abuse disorder is only accomplished when a person realizes total wellness of body, mind, and spirit.
