“No person, trying to take responsibility for her or his identity, should have to be so alone. There must be those among whom we can sit down and weep, and still be counted as warriors.”
~Adrienne Rich, Sources
One of the first things you learn when you are participating in a San Diego outpatient drug and alcohol rehab program is the importance of having a strong support system. There are going to be times when you feel stressed, overwhelmed, and tempted, and THOSE are the times when you need people in your corner.
You may have more resources than you realize –
- Get MOTIVATION from your family –When you feel like giving up, remember everything that you stand to regain with your loved ones.
- Get KNOWLEDGE from your counselors –If you are always completely honest with the people who are tasked with helping you regain your sobriety, they will be able to give you the tools that you need to succeed.
- Get INSPIRATION from others in recovery –Look at the others in your therapy groups and the people you see in recovery fellowship meetings. If others who have been where you are can regain their serenity, so can you.
- Be held ACCOUNTABLE by your sponsor and recovery network – Everyone needs a push in the right direction sometimes. When you’re tempted, call the person who promised to guide you.
