Did you know that almost 20% of marijuana products being sold in California have failed safety tests for purity and potency? That’s right, nearly 1 in 5 legal pot products have been found to contain unacceptable levels of:
- Chemical solvents
Especially problematic are cannabis-infused tinctures, candies, and cookies—about one-third of products tested have been determined to be unsafe. Marijuana concentrates such as waxes and oils are rejected twice as often as buds.
Correct potency is a major problem. Approximately 65% of the failures were due to inaccurate claims on the label, including THC concentration.
These poor results are especially concerning because, while the State of California did not start testing until July 1, it announced the testing much earlier. Companies were given six whole months to sell off earlier stockpiles of marijuana, edibles, and concentrates that were produced before the stricter testing guidelines.

The rejection rate could—and SHOULD—have been much higher. Cannalysis Labs, a testing company based in Santa Ana, says that it can detect many potentially-harmful yeast and mold species in the samples it has checked, but those specific species are not yet covered in the State’s guidelines.
Swetha Kaul, the Chief Scientific Officer for the company, says this limitation is “essentially creating a loophole where every other species can get by.” For example, Cannalysis inspectors have witnessed mold-covered marijuana that still passed inadequate state tests.
Kaul also sits on the Board of Directors for the California Cannabis Industry Association
What’s the Bottom Line about Marijuana Testing in California?
All of this information continues to highlight the fact that maybe legal weed isn’t as safe as it’s claimed to be. Apart from these poor testing results, marijuana has previously been linked to:
- Heart disease and stroke
- Premature brain aging
- Poor fetal development
- Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome
- Bipolar Disorder
