Record Amounts of Meth and Fentanyl Seized in San Diego

A record-breaking seizure highlights how serious the drug threat in San Diego still is.

Earlier this month, a truck driver was arrested as he tried to smuggle drugs from Mexico through the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Although the manifest said the truck was carrying auto body parts, closer inspection with an X-ray machine and a drug-sniffing dog revealed the startling truth.

Hidden in the tractor-trailer were more than 17,500 pounds of methamphetamine and 389 pounds of fentanyl. This single seizure was the largest for either drug in the entire United States for both 2020 and 2021. The driver, a Mexican citizen, now faces federal drug charges.

A Disturbing Local Trend

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident or an aberration. In fact, this drug bust is just another example evidencing a disturbing trend.

For example, in October 2020, 3100 pounds of meth were confiscated at the same Otay Mesa crossing point. In fact, within one four-week period, over 8000 pounds of meth were seized locally. It comes as no surprise to learn that meth overdoses in San Diego are soaring.

As for fentanyl, it is now considered to be the deadliest drug in America and the driving force behind the still-worsening overdose crisis. Locally, fentanyl overdoses in San Diego have tripled since 2019.

The major factor driving the fentanyl threat in San Diego is its close proximity to Mexico and the superlabs located there. In fact, the latest National Drug Threat Assessment reported that the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation drug cartels now control illicit fentanyl production and distribution.

There are three Points of Entry in the San Diego-Tijuana Metro, including the San Ysidro Port of Entry, one of the busiest land crossings in the world. Daily, 20,000 pedestrians and 70,000 vehicles pass through San Ysidro into the U.S.
Over 90% of all illegal drugs in America enter this country from Mexico.

Protecting Yourself and Your Family

This pattern of huge drug seizures shows just how bad the drug problem in Southern California really is, especially in San Diego. Because drugs are so easy to get, it is entirely possible that someone you care about is battling Substance Use Disorder right now.
