Preliminary analysis of 2016’s data leads to estimates that between 59,000 and 65,000 people in America died because of fatal drug overdoses last year. Although the exact numbers won’t be known until December 2017, that is a projected one-year increase of over 19%.
If those estimates are correct, then California will “lead” the nation in fatal drug overdoses, with at least an estimated 5544 in 2016 – 885 more overdose deaths than in 2015.
What is Driving Drug Overdoses?
As it has the last few years, the answer is OPIOIDS, but in new and terrifying ways.
According to the latest numbers:
- 63% of fatal overdoses are because of prescription and illicit opioids.
- Deaths due to synthetic opioids surged 72% in 2015.
- To put that number in perspective:
- Natural opioid deaths (morphine, codeine, OxyContin, Vicodin) – decreased 6%
- Methadone deaths – decreased 1%
- Heroin deaths rose to 12,990 in 2015.
- In 2010, that number was 3036.
- That is a 428%
