“These findings suggest the importance of both informal and formal supports to reinforce and continue progress made in residential treatment.”
Dr. Jennifer Manuel, PhD, Assistant Professor, NYU Silver School of Social Work, and also a researcher affiliated with New York University’s Center for Drug Use and HIV Research (NYU CDUHR)
Many people who “graduate” from residential rehab initially find it hard to readjust to everyday life. When the structure and support provided by the facility is removed, they often return to old triggers that can reduce or even reverse the gains made during inpatient treatment.
Relapse rates during the first year after discharge from residential rehab are between 37% and 56%.
What Are Some of the Challenges after Residential Rehab?
According to a December 2016 study published in The Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, individuals recently discharged from a residential program frequently face several significant struggles:
- Meeting basic needs (a place to live, a job, financial security)—62.5% of interviewees
- No (or limited) support network—46.9%
- Strained relationships—43.8%
- Friends/Family still using drugs—40.6%
- Lack of housing for substance abusers—34.4%
- Stressful neighborhoods—31.3%
What Can Help?
In addition to all of the above, Dr. Manuel specifically stressed the importance of “aftercare services”. In fact, participation in structured aftercare such as an outpatient rehab program is one of the most effective strategies that can help prevent relapse.
Unfortunately, only around half of people leaving a residential facility ever contact an outpatient program to seek aftercare. And, because there is usually very little emphasis on how to successfully transition, even fewer manage to complete the recommended length.
Here’s the bottom line—the right outpatient program makes all the difference. If you have recently left an inpatient rehab facility and need continuing aftercare and support, Lasting Recovery is one of the most-reputable outpatient drug and alcohol rehabs in Southern California.
